Mission Statement

Mission Statement: Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church is a community of faith led by the Holy Spirit to worship, work and witness for our Lord Jesus Christ, sharing the hope we find in God’s all embracing love with our neighbor, our community and our world.

A Theology of Love. God’s love has come to us through Jesus Christ. This Love is offered purely as a matter of God’s grace. It cannot be earned by our good works or merited by good behavior. And yet, good works and godly behavior grow out of our sense of gratitude for this grace in which we stand, as we are moved to share that Love with others.

A Sense of Belonging.
Since we have been fully accepted and embraced by a gracious and loving God, we also feel that we have found a community of people with whom we can be fully, simply and truly who we are. And, through that mutual acceptance, we sense that we have found the place where we truly belong: The Family of God.

A Call to Act. While we strive to embody God’s love and grace where we are and with those nearby, we are not content to simply be a `stationary model’ of faith. We take seriously to heart God’s call in Jesus Christ to reach out into the world around us.
And so, we not only create an open-armed welcome to all those who pass through our church doors, we also have a deep desire to act out our faith through tangible, meaningful outreach to our local community and through financial and prayerful support of global mission.

A Heart for Teaching. Not only do we believe that we are called to `reach out’ into the world around us. We also sense the unsurpassed significance of `reaching down’ to succeeding generations. In a world filled with such great global strife, and increasing inner conflict, we feel a growing sense of urgency to teach our faith in God’s Love to the children in our midst.

To Worship from the Heart. We hold the act of worship to be our primary response to God’s grace, through Jesus Christ, in our lives. Out of an increasing sense of gratitude and a deep and abiding joy, we desire to lift hearts and voices in prayer and praise to our God, Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer. Authentic worship, therefore, should be joyful, uplifting, encouraging, challenging, inspiring, and instructive. It should be Spirit led and offer opportunities for interaction and community building. We further believe that such worship should occur, not just on Sunday morning, but each and everyday.
